Karwa Chauth, a Hindu festival, will be observed on October 20. This festival is celebrated on the fourth day of Krishna Paksha in the Kartik month, which falls in October and November in the Gregorian calendar. The name «Kartik» derives from the Krittika Nakshatra.
Karwa Chauth is mainly observed by married Hindu women, especially in northern India.
On this day, women wake up early and consume sargi before sunrise. They then fast from sunrise until the moon becomes visible in the evening. Women break their fast only after offering arghya to the moon.
The festival emphasizes the significance of family life, with married women praying for the long life of their husbands.
One popular story associated with Karwa Chauth is about Veervati, who had seven brothers. After her marriage, she began observing the Karwa Chauth fast. However, her brothers, unable to see her fast throughout the day, deceived her into breaking her fast early, leading to her husband's demise.
After praying fervently, Veervati was asked by God to sincerely observe Karwa Chauth the following year, after which she got her husband back.
