Jasprit Bumrah from other fast bowlers or his competitors is his unique action, which helps him achieve that deadly pace and accuracy that create too many troubles for the best batters in the world. But the same action could be causing career-threatening injuries to the Gujarat pacer, as his seven-year international career has been plagued by many of them. Injuries are part and parcel of a fast bowler's life, but the amount of cricket that has been played these days has put added pressure on the bodies of pacers across the world, and that is why workload management is something that is seriously looked at in world cricket these days.
Bumrah underwent back surgery in March, and now Team India fans are waiting for his return as he will lead India in the T20 series against Ireland in two weeks. Bumrah's return to action would give India a huge advantage in two showpiece events: the Asia Cup and the ODI Cricket World Cup, which will be played in India in October. While cricket fans are looking forward to seeing Bumrah in action, Aussie legend Glen McGrath, who was a member of the Steve Waugh-led team that produced incredible results in the 2000s, has made a serious observation about the Indian pacer.
McGrath has all praise for Bumrah and a word of caution too. «He (Bumrah) has been incredible for India. His bowling stats, the wickets he has taken, and the way he bowls, I’m a big fan.
His bowling action puts a lot of stress on his body. So he needs to stay strong and fit. If he does that he could play for a few more years,» the 53-year-old said on the sidelines of a fast bowlers’ camp organised by the MRF Pace Foundation, where he is the director.
