Supreme Court on Thursday stayed National Green Tribunal order restricting the number of persons to 30 who can be part of a 'dhol-tasha' group involved in an idol immersion of Lord Ganesh.
Let them do 'dhol-tasha', it is heart of Pune, said SC on staying NGT direction capping numbers in group performance during Ganesh festival.
A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra heard the case.
In a brief hearing, lawyer Amit Pai said that 'dhol-tasha' has had a very «deep cultural significance» in Pune for over a hundred years and it was started by Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak.
He added that the August 30 direction of the NGT will affect such groups.
