At least 54 people were injured and over 100 were feared trapped after a hoarding collapsed at the Police Ground Petrol Pump on the Eastern Express Highway in Pantnagar, Ghatkopar East, according to Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC).
BMC further said that the rescue operations are currently underway.
The NDRF team conducting rescue operations at the scene reported that they have successfully rescued 67 individuals from underneath the collapsed billboard. Officials further stated that those injured in the incident have been promptly transported to Rajawadi Hospital, operated by the civic body.
Following the incident, the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra declared that a thorough investigation has been initiated to examine the circumstances surrounding the event. “Departments like Mumbai Police, Municipal Corporation, Disaster Management are coordinating and efforts are being made to evacuate the trapped people on a war footing. The injured are being treated at Rajawadi Hospital and will be given all possible assistance,” said the DY CM.
At 1600 Hrs, the IMD issued a warning indicating a high likelihood of a thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and moderate to intense rain spells, along with gusty winds reaching 50-60 kmph, in isolated areas of Thane and Satara within the next 3-4 hours.
