This could be another setback to India-Canada ties which deteriorated after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused India for the murder of Khalistani terrorist and a Canadian citizen Hardeep Nijjar in Vancouver last year,
Many see targeting India as a meddler in elections as a ploy by the Trudeau government to deflect attention from the rampant Chinese interference which has been in favour of Trudeau's Liberal Party. China is known to infiltrate parliaments in many developed countries.
Last month, human rights groups and the opposition Conservative Party had questioned the credibility of the inquiry process of the commission which was set up by the Trudeau government.
What's behind Trudeau's India baiting?
By accusing Indian agencies of killing Nijjar last year, Trudeau managed to launch an issue that took the Canadians' attention off his own troubles. The extreme posturing by the Canadian government and India's strong response made India a big talking point in Canada.
Just before that, the most controversial issue in Canada was China meddling in elections in collusion with Trudeau's party.
Months before the Nijjar issue hogged the public attention, Trudeau's government had faced growing criticism after media reports surfaced alleging that China sought to interfere in the 2019 and 2021 Canadian elections.
Earlier in 2023, a Canadian lawmaker stepped down from Trudeau's Liberal Party after a media report raised questions about his dealings with China. Canadian MP Han Dong said he will leave the Liberals and sit in Parliament as an independent lawmaker to avoid causing problems for Trudeau's party.
