The billionaire entrepreneur and founder of Microsoft assured of financial help construction of the next-generation nuclear power plant that may “revolutionize” the way power is generated. His company TerraPower will construct a small advanced nuclear reactor that uses sodium instead of water for cooling, reports the 'New York Times'.

Sodium-based nuclear reactor
TerraPower applied to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for the sodium-based nuclear reactor, that will operate without emitting greenhouse gases. PacifiCorp plans to get carbon-free power from the reactor and says it is weighing how much nuclear to include in its long-range planning. The plant will be constructed in Wyoming near PacifiCorp’s Naughton Power Plant.

Smaller new types of commercial nuclear reactors use a coolant other than water and operate at lower pressures and higher temperatures. Russia is the pioneer of this technology which has been available for decades, but the US energy companies have continued to build large, conventional water-cooled reactors.
