Hyundai and Kia are issuing recalls for more than 600,000 vehicles in Canada. While, Hyundai's recall affects 326,942 vehicles in Canada.
Kia Canada's recall affects 276,225 vehicles.
The affected car models in Canada are Hyundai Accent, Hyundai Elantra, Hyundai Elantra Coupe, Hyundai Equus, Hyundai Genesis Coupe, Hyundai Santa Fe, Hyundai Santa Fe Sport, Hyundai Tucson, and Hyundai Veracruz. For Kia, affected models in Canada are Borregos, Cadenzas, Fortes, Forte Koups, K900s, Optimas, Rios, Rondos, Sorrentos, Souls, and Sportages.
Both Hyundai and Kia have also initiated a recall of nearly 3.4 million vehicles in the US, and they are advising owners to park their vehicles outside due to the risk of engine compartment fires.
The recall encompasses various car and SUV models produced between the 2010 and 2019 model years, including Hyundai's Santa Fe SUV and Kia's Sorrento SUV.
Documents released by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Wednesday reveal that the anti-lock brake control module can develop fluid leaks, leading to electrical shorts that may ignite a fire while the vehicles are parked or in operation.
The automakers are recommending that owners park their vehicles outdoors and away from structures until the necessary repairs are completed. Dealers will replace the anti-lock brake fuse, and this service will be provided at no cost to the vehicle owners.
Kia plans to begin sending notification letters to owners on November 14, while Hyundai's date for notification is November 21.
According to the documents, Hyundai has reported 21 fires in the affected vehicles in the US, along with 22 «thermal incidents» involving smoke, burning, and melting of parts. Kia has reported 10 fires and
