As per a ToI report, the inauguration of this service, alongside assisted reproductive technology (ART) and intrauterine insemination (IUI), was done by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant at the Goa Medical College (GMC) in Bambolim yesterday. The service is already receiving a good response, with approximately 100 parents registering with GMC to access the IVF facility located within its super-speciality block. According to Ernst & Young's Call to Action report, the fertility business in the country has expanded 15-20% each year over the last five years. The country presently sees between 250000 to 300,000 IVF treatments each year.
This increase is due to the country's underlying surge in infertility, which now affects at least 15% of Indian couples. Fertility disorders affect around 2.75 crore Indian couples, and this number is expected to climb as sedentary lifestyles, stress, obesity, and other medical conditions become more prevalent. However, fertility services are sometimes regarded excessive, limiting access to these services for many people, particularly those in the middle and lower income brackets.
