Roland Emmerich, the director of the iconic film Independence Day, has recently shared his candid thoughts on the future of the franchise, particularly addressing the issues surrounding a potential sequel, Will Smith’s absence, and Disney's role in the saga.
Emmerich, who is currently focused on historical epics as the executive producer and director of Those About to Die—a Peacock series set in the Roman Empire—took time during a recent podcast appearance to discuss his blockbuster hit, Independence Day. The 1996 film, which remains one of his most celebrated works, was followed by a sequel in 2016 titled Independence Day: Resurgence.
Despite the anticipation, the sequel was met with disappointment by many fans, partly due to the absence of Will Smith, as mentioned in a report by Movieweb.
While Smith’s character was notably absent, Emmerich revealed that the main issue with reviving the franchise is not solely related to Smith's departure. The core problem, according to Emmerich, is Disney’s involvement. He explained:
“I’ve been like, (Will’s character) died in number two, but also, Disney now has the decision to make it, which is even worse, you know, because they never ever did my deal”, as quoted in a report by Movieweb.
