The commissioning of the three frontline naval combatants will strengthen the country's efforts towards being a global leader in defence and augment its strength towards self-reliance, said Modi in a post on X.
The Navy described the commissioning of the three major combatants as a historic occasion.
Stealth-capable INS Nilgiri is a flagship vessel of a new class of frigates called Project 17A. The frigate will have seven ships and is a major evolution over the Shivalik-class currently in service. The ships in this class are designed by the Navy's Warship Design Bureau and has advanced features for enhanced attack and stealth capabilities. Each ship cost an estimated Rs 4,000 crore. These are being built in dockyards in Mumbai and Kolkata.
Captain Nitin Kapoor, the Nilgiri's Commanding Officer, told the media that the ship's advanced stealth capacity was the result of a re-designed top deck. Traditional fittings like anchors have been moved to a hidden 'mooring deck', for improved suppression of the radar signature, he said.
