MLAs in state assemblies and union territories is Rs 13.63 crore, according to a finding by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and National Election Watch (NEW). The nonprofits analysed the election affidavits of 4001 MLAs out of 4033 across 28 State Assemblies and two union Territories. The MLAs represent 84 political parties and independents.
Among the major parties, the average asset per MLA for 1356 BJP MLAs is Rs. 11.97 crore, for 719 Congress MLAs is Rs 21.97 crore, for 227 Trinamool Congress MLAs is Rs 3.51 crore, for 161 AAP MLAs is Rs 10.20 crore and 146 YSR Congress MLAs is Rs.23.14 crore. The total assets of 4001 sitting MLAs add up to Rs.
54,545 crore, which is more than the combined annual budgets for 2023-24 of Nagaland, Mizoram and Sikkim. The annual budget 2023-24 of Nagaland is Rs 23,086 crore, Mizoram is Rs 14,210 crore and Sikkim is Rs 11,807 crore. The total assets for 1356 BJP MLAs analysed is Rs.
16,234 crore, for 719 Congress MLAs is Rs 15,798 crore, for 146 YSR Congress MLAs is Rs 3,379 crores, for 131 DMK MLAs is Rs 1,663 crore and 161 AAP MLAs is Rs.1,642 crore. The total assets of sitting BJP and Congress MLAs are Rs 16,234 crore and Rs 15,798 crore, respectively, which add up to Rs 32,032 crore or 58.73% of the total assets of the sitting MLAs of 84 political parties and independents. The two figures are also larger than the 2023-24 annual budgets of Mizoram (Rs 14,210 crore) and Sikkim (Rs 11,807 crore), respectively.Karnataka – the state with highest total assets of MLAs: The total assets of 223 MLAs analysed from Karnataka is Rs 14,359 crore, followed by 284 MLAs from Maharashtra at Rs 6,679 crore and 174 MLAs from Andhra Pradesh at Rs.4,914 crore.
