black armbands during their World Cup showdown against England to remember the legendary spinner and former captain, Bishan Singh Bedi, who passed away on October 23, 2023. The BCCI released a statement shortly after the commencement of the World Cup contest in Lucknow, confirming the team's gesture.
Bishan Singh Bedi is survived by his wife Anju, daughter Neha, son Angad, Gavas Inder Singh, and daughter Gillinder from his previous marriage to Glenith Miles.
The former cricketer had been battling health issues for the past two years and had undergone multiple surgeries, including one on his knee.
Bedi, who passed away at the age of 77 after a prolonged illness, served as India's captain for two years between 1976-1978, leading the team in 22 Tests and representing the nation in a total of 67 Tests and 10 ODIs from 1967-1979. He also captained India in four one-day internationals during that period.
Upon his retirement, Bedi held the record for being India's highest wicket-taker in Tests with 266 dismissals at an impressive average of 28.71.
Bedi was a vital member of India's formidable spin quartet, alongside Bhagwath Chandrasekhar, Erapalli Prasanna, and Srinivas Venkataraghavan.
In Sunday's World Cup match, India was invited to bat after England won the toss.
