India vs New Zealand Highlights: India withstand tricky Kiwi challenge to clinch third Champions Trophy title
Rohit Sharma and his men overcame a fierce challenge from New Zealand on Sunday to clinch their third Champions Trophy title in style.
Both India and New Zealand have tasted success in this tournament before. India's last triumph came in 2013, while they finished as runners-up to Pakistan in 2017. The Men in Blue also shared the title with Sri Lanka in 2002 after a rain-marred two-day final.
New Zealand, on the other hand, won the Champions Trophy in 2000—then known as the ICC Knockout Trophy—defeating India in the final at Nairobi, Kenya. To this day, it remains the Black Caps’ only ICC limited-overs title.
Chasing 252, Team India captain Rohit Sharma signaled his intent from the very first over, launching Kyle Jamieson for a massive six in signature style. He continued his aggressive approach, finding the boundary twice more before taking on Nathan Smith, sending a towering 92-meter six over long-on. By the end of the sixth over, India had raced to 39/0.
New Zealand had their first real chance in the seventh over when Shubman Gill went after Jamieson, but Daryl Mitchell couldn’t hold on to a tough catch while Gill was on 7. Rohit kept up the pressure, smashing his third six and following it up with two more boundaries off Nathan Smith, collecting 14 runs in the eighth over. India surged to 59/0.
