India will be a leader in telecom technologies in years to come with the investments being made by the country in 5G and 6G and domestic equipment manufacturing, telecom minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said. He was speaking during the inaugural session of the India Mobile Congress 2023.
“Today, the whole world is watching India expectantly.
Technologies being developed in the country will lead India to a leadership position in the years to come,” Vaishnaw said.
The telecom sector has seen a complete turnaround in the last ten years, having come out of the bane of scams and legal battles, the union minister said.
“Telecom is the gateway of Digital India.
In the last ten years, the domestic telecom industry has come out of scams and legal battles to become a sunrise industry. India is being recognised globally for the fastest rollout of 5G network. Telecom equipment being designed and manufactured in India are today exported to more than 70 countries,” Vaishnaw said.
India also has the cheapest data rates compared to other countries in the world, he said, adding that there were nearly 114 crore mobile subscribers in the country today. The country has also managed to transform itself from a mobile device importing country to a manufacturing and export powerhouse, he said.
“A few years ago, nearly 98% of the mobile phones we used were being imported.
Today, the same number of mobile phones are being made in India. In total, mobile phones worth Rs 90,000 crore were exported last year,” Vaishnaw said.
Over the last 10 years, the telecom sector has also seen advancements in breaking down the barriers to promote ease of doing business, he said.
