In line with the principles of Self-reliant India and Start Up India in the field of defence, the Indian Army has formed a specialized technology unit to conduct research and development of future communication technologies like Artificial Intelligence, 5G, 6G, Machine Learning, Quantum technologies for defence.
It has unveiled the Signals Technology Evaluation and Adaptation Group (STEAG), a pioneering unit dedicated to exploring futuristic communication technologies for defence applications. Comprising approximately 280 personnel, STEAG is poised to revolutionize communication infrastructure within the army.
According to sources in the defence and security establishment, “STEAG’s establishment aligns perfectly with the Indian Army’s vision of embracing cutting-edge technologies to prepare for future challenges. As part of the army’s “On Path to Transformation” initiative, STEAG marks a pivotal development in the Year of Tech Absorption, declared for 2024.”
This will help in undertaking research and evaluation of futuristic communication technologies like AI, 5G, 6G, machine learning, quantum technologies etc., for defence applications. This organization will make India self-reliant in the field of defence because till now some countries have monopoly on technology, but now India can also become a ‘game changer’ through this organization.
In fact, communication is the most important link of military operation. The need of the hour is the rapidly developing technology in the battlefield and artificial intelligence-based technology to enhance intelligence and operations along with better communication. During modern warfare, it is a big challenge to connect all the units and formations to each other without any hindrance.
