Toyota Hilux as part of its efforts to modernise its fleet and add to its transportation muscle. Lt Gen AnindyaSengupta received the first set of Toyota Hilux — Mountain off-Road Vehicles from Mr V Wiseline Sigamani, General Manager Strategic Business Unit (North) after rigorous testing in most inclement weather & rough terrain, the Army's Northern Command tweeted. The pre-delivery technical assessment involved testing the vehicle in inclement conditions such rough terrains and extreme weather.
These included high altitude areas (13,000 ft) and sub-zero temperature. The MRVs were delivered by Toyota Kirloskar Motor. Mahindra & Mahindra had recently bagged an order of 1,850 units of the Scorpio Classic from the forces.
The Hilux is known for its enhanced off-road chops. It has a four-wheel drive, a low-range gearbox, excellent manoeuvrability in tricky terrain and significant water-wading capability (700 mm). The model is powered by a 2.8 diesel engine and comes with manual and automatic transmission options.
India's armed forces are currently in the process of replacing the aging Maruti Gypsy that has served the army for many years. The new vehicles are expected to usher in the next era for Army's transportation needs. The forces are also looking at inducting electric vehicles.
