West Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) with months left for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
Squabbles and discontent among grassroot workers saw BJP workers trying to force their way into their party office at Salt Lake City on Wednesday. The fury of protesting workers prompted BJP leaders to lock themselves in the office. Aggrieved BJP workers from North 24-Parganas were seen trying to break the lock of the main gate with bricks.
They took out a march to the party headquarters in Muralidhar Sen Street, the next day.
During the march, they stomped on party flags and posters of senior leaders. The protesting BJP workers carried posters and banners, 'Save West Bengal BJP' and shouted slogans. «BJP leaders in Birbhum have joined hands with Trinamool and extorted money,» a protester alleged.
The split is widespread and saw Union minister of state for education Subhas Sarkar locked up in his room in Bankura recently.
The incidents come ahead of home minister Amit Shah's visit to Kolkata on Monday. Incidentally, Shah had set a target of winning 35 out of 42 Lok Sabha seats in 2024 for Bengal BJP leaders.
«The fight between the new and old has been on for a while. When a family grows, this happens.
There are differences with those who joined the party later,» state BJP former president Dilip Ghosh said.
The disgruntlement was evident during the Dhupguri bypoll recently, where a section of BJP workers reportedly stayed away from voting as the candidate of their own choice was denied the ticket. Consequently, Trinamool won the bypoll although the vacancy was created by the death of BJP MLA.
«This is not the way to express discontent. They should have informed the party leadership of their grievance.
