Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana will see an investment of over Rs 75,000 crore. The scheme, first announced on January 22, aims to light up 1 crore households by enabling them for free electricity of up to 300 units every month.
It envisages substantive subsidies directly in the bank accounts of the consumers and heavily concessional bank loans, PM Modi said on microblogging platform X.
“The central government will ensure that there is no cost burden on the people. All stakeholders will be integrated to a National Online Portal which will further convenience [it],” he said.
The interim budget had also proposed the rooftop solar segment, outlining that 10 million households will be enabled to get up to 300 units free electricity every month under the scheme then proposed as Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana with an outlay of Rs 10,000 crore.
To popularise the scheme, urban local bodies and panchayats will be incentivised to promote rooftop solar installations in their jurisdictions, the Prime Minister said today.
The scheme will lead to more income, lesser power bills and employment generation, Modi said.
He urged residential consumers, especially youngsters, to start applying for setting up rooftop solar projects on the online portal of the government.
After the Prime Minister’s announcement of the scheme in January, power minister RK Singh had said the government was looking to increase the subsidy for rooftop solar projects for households to 60% of the capital cost from 40%
