Chhindwara Lok Sabha Election 2024: In the political battleground of Madhya Pradesh, Chhindwara emerges as a critical contest, where the Nath family's stronghold faces a formidable challenge.
For over seven decades, this constituency in southern Madhya Pradesh has remained a Congress fortress, synonymous with the enduring legacy of the Naths – Kamal Nath, Alka Nath, and their son Nakul.
The never-say-die Congress fort
Despite being a saffron-dominated state, Chhindwara has steadfastly resisted BJP's advances, even during the Modi waves of 2019 and 2023. However, the tide seems to be turning this time.
When loyalty takes a backseat
The BJP has strategically targeted Nath loyalists and veteran Congress workers, leaving Kamal Nath and Nakul to fend for themselves. Since the conclusion of the 2023 assembly elections, there has been a steady exodus of Congress functionaries from Chhindwara – foot soldiers, panchayat members, councillors, and even an MLA.
The shock of defection hit hard with Kamlesh Shah, MLA from Amarwara, a crucial segment that played a pivotal role in Nakul's victory in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. His departure prompted Nakul to brand him a “gaddar” (traitor).
Among those crossing over to the saffron camp is Deepak Saxena, a trusted companion of Nath for over four decades. Despite Kamal Nath's plea, Deepak's defection dealt a significant blow to the Naths' stronghold.
