Venice International Film Festival has chosen its closing film for the upcoming event in September. This movie will be «La Sociedad de la nieve» (‘Society of the Snow’), directed by acclaimed filmmaker J.A. Bayona.
It will take the spotlight on Saturday, September 9, at the Sala Grande of the Palazzo del Cinema at the Lido di Venezia. This screening will follow the presentation of awards at the festival. The film delves into the harrowing true story of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which encountered a tragic accident in 1972 while carrying a rugby team to Chile.
The crash left only 29 survivors out of 45 passengers. Trapped in the treacherous and remote Andes mountains, the survivors faced an unforgiving environment, leading them to resort to extreme measures to endure. J.A.
Bayona, known for his directorial success in films like «The Orphanage» and «The Impossible,» takes on the director's chair for «Society of the Snow.» The cast includes Enzo Vogrincic, Matías Recalt, Agustín Pardella, Esteban Kukuriczka and Tomas Wolf. The screenplay, co-written by J.A. Bayona, Bernat Vilaplana, Jaime Marques and Nicolás Casariego, is based on the novel by Pablo Vierci.
Netflix will handle the international distribution of the film. The Spanish filmmaker, J.A. Bayona, made his impressive directorial debut with «The Orphanage» at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007, receiving accolades and seven Goya Awards.
