Bengal government on Jadavpur University issue, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said on Sunday that the death of a young student is «a worrisome issue» and the state government cannot run away from its responsibility. He said a probe should be conducted into the matter. Meanwhile, another former student of the university has been arrested and remanded to police custody till August 24 in connection with alleged ragging and death of a first year Jadavpur University, taking the total arrested number to 13.
«Jadavpur is a world renowned university and we will not allow the university to be defamed. We will also not allow ragging in the university… The state government and state education department cannot run away from its responsibilities. It has to investigate the matter,» Pradhan said during a programme in Kolkata.
«Whatever incident in Jadavpur University has come to the forefront is worrisome and a major cause of concern. In whatever words, the matter being criticized is always less. A young boy has lost his life due to ragging.
The court has also mentioned the issue. The Bengal government's helplessness is visible… I am keeping track of the developments in Jadavpur University,» Pradhan said. Talking in detail about the UGC report, the Union minister said, «Whatever information I have received till yesterday, we have done an internal review and the UGC is not satisfied and does not agree with the replies.
UGC's several rules have been ignored and it has taken cognizance of the matter. UGC as a regulatory body is discussing the issue with the university. I have also given my suggestions to the UGC,» he said.
