YSR Congress chief and Andhra Pradesh chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on July 5, amid speculation of his arch-rival N Chandrababu Naidu-led TDP rejoining the BJP-led NDA alliance. Reddy's meeting with both Modi and Shah also assumes significance as the YSRCP's support has been crucial for the BJP in passage of important legislations in the Rajya Sabha where the ruling alliance does not enjoy majority.
Now, with PM Modi pitching for the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), ideological commitment of the ruling BJP, YSRCP's support would be again crucial if the government intends to pass the UCC in Parliament in near future. Sources within the YSR Congress said the party may clear its stand on the UCC after its president Jagan Reddy's meeting with PM Modi.
YSRCP has nine members in the Rajya Sabha. This will also be Reddy's first visit to the national capital after Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief N Chandrababu Naidu's meeting with BJP President JP Nadda and Shah, last month, at the latter's residence in Delhi, which led to the buzz of coming together of the erstwhile allies.
Sources in the TDP suggest there is high probability of both their party and BJP contesting Telangana assembly polls together and then Andhra Pradesh also, along with Jan Sena, the saffron party's existing ally. But perhaps the YSRCP's support for passage of bills in the Rajya Sabha could be the reason to finalise it at the last moment, they said.
TDP was a part of the NDA in 2014 but quit the ruling alliance in March 2018 before the 2019 elections on the issue of special status to Andhra Pradesh. However, both parties came together after the recent municipal elections in Port Blair.
