Reliance Jio continued to outpace Bharti Airtel in the race to grab Vodafone Idea's subscribers in the month of May according to the latest subscriber data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) Tuesday. The market leader added 3 million subscribers during the month as compared to 1.3 million added by its closest competitor Airtel. Vodafone Idea lost 2.8 million subscribers in May, data released by the sector regulator indicated. Jio's total subscriber base at the end of May was 436.3 million, Airtel's was 372.3 million while Vodafone Idea's customer base shrunk to 230.9 million. Jio's subscriber market share for May was 38.17% (37.90% in April) while Airtel commanded 32.57% (32.45% in April). Vodafone Idea further ceded market share to peers as its share decreased to 20.20% in May from 20.45% in April. Airtel's active user base grew to 100.09% (99.81% in April) in May while Jio saw active user base increase to 94.46% (93.99% in April). Vodafone Idea saw a marginal increase in active users at 88.88% in May as compared to 88.57% in April.

The overall telecom user base was mainly flat month on month due to muted additions (0.01%) in wireless users and a 0.07 decline in wireline users during May. Mobile Number Portability (MNP) requests in May rose to 11.47 million (10.95 million in April) taking the cumulative MNP requests to 842.12 million at the end of May-23from 830.65 million at the end of April-23.
