The bill, prepared by the Labour department at the instance of the Electronics & IT/BT department to amend the Shops & Establishments Act, 1961, to increase the daily working hours from 9 hours to 12 hours, and up to 14 hours in exceptions circumstances with a government notification in each such instance, has kicked up a storm in the tech sector employee circles.
The Labour department, which was preparing to move the bill in the ongoing legislature session, has developed second thoughts about the proposed move. “A request has come from the IT companies." Labour Minister Santosh Lad said he tried to gather opinions of stakeholders, but there had been divergent views. The government will take a call.
