Kiran Rao's Laapataa Ladies has been officially selected as India’s entry for the Oscars 2025 for foreign film category, the Film Federation of India announced on Monday. This Hindi film, a satirical take on patriarchy, was chosen from a pool of 29 films, including prominent titles like the Bollywood blockbuster Animal, Malayalam National Award-winning Aattam, and Cannes winner All We Imagine As Light. The movie was co-produced by Kiran Rao's ex-husband Aamir Khan.
Since its release on Netflix on April 26, Laapataa Ladies has been met with widespread acclaim, with audiences taking to social media platforms like X to share their favorite moments from the film. This is Rao’s second feature film as a director, following her critically acclaimed debut with Dhobi Ghat in 2010. The inspiration for Laapataa Ladies comes from Biplab Goswami’s story Two Brides, which Aamir Khan discovered during a scriptwriting competition.
