“Every product will slowly start getting into mid-calorie and no-sugar segments. As of now, we have no-sugar 7 Up, Pepsi Black and Gatorade in India,” said Ravi Jaipuria, chairman of PepsiCo’s bottling partner Varun Beverages. “Consumers have accepted this well and we are performing extremely well.”
In calendar year (CY) 2024, lowsugar and no-sugar drinks contributed 44.4% to PepsiCo’s sales volume, up from 40.2% a year ago, according to data from the listed Varun Beverages, the highest jump in a year.
Low-sugar and no-sugar products were on slow burn for more than a decade but social media posts on health, fitness and fashion are making them more popular, said industry watchers. India has gained a reputation for being the world’s diabetes capital, given the rising prevalence of the disease and associated comorbidities along with high levels of sugar consumption. To be sure, the World Health Organization and experts have questioned whether replacing sugar with sweeteners is healthy and helps with weight control.
