Coimbatore there's a scenic constituency which is also witnessing a three-cornered fight, cementing the belief that the BJP is specifically targeting the Kongu belt to dismantle the Dravidian parties' stronghold in the region.
The Pollachi Lok Sabha constituency is gearing up for a triangular fight between the AIADMK, DMK and BJP. The BJP, much like in the Nilgiris and Coimbatore, has fielded its own candidate, K Vasantha Rajan, against the DMK's K Eswarasamy and the AIADMK's A Karthikeyan. All three parties have fielded fresh faces in the constituency, with the Dravidian parties hoping to capitalise on their well-known symbols and the sense of loyalty among their supporters to trump the BJP. Naam Tamilar Katchi's N Sureshkumar is another candidate in the fray.
The most significant issues in the constituency range from agricultural to infrastructural as residents complained that good roads, clean drinking water and increasing drug use were going to be the things they would keep in mind while picking between the two leaves, rising sun and lotus symbols.
In 2019, K Shanmuga Sundaram of the DMK won with a 51.23% vote share, while C Mahendran of the AIADMK came second by securing 34.97% votes. In 2014, C Mahendran had won with a 41.19% vote share while E Eswaran of the BJP was the runner-up with 27.27% votes.
This time, the BJP has fielded its own candidate after a decade, while the AIADMK is counting on its supremacy in the constituency, where it won in 2009 and 2014. The DMK, on its part, is leaving no stone
