Mumbaikars have been scammed by being promised VIP tents, helicopter rides to the biggest spiritual event through fake websites and official-looking bank accounts.
A 55-year-old businesswoman, who owns a furniture showroom in Lower Parel, who wanted to visit Maha Kumbh with five friends lost Rs 4 lakh online. The victim fell prey to the scam because the money she transferred was to an account named UP State Tourism.
An FIR was filed with the N M Joshi Marg police station on Monday. The complainant said that he was duped of Rs 3.78 lakh. On February 7, she and her husband browsed the internet in search of a tent and flight tickets for a return trip. She stumbled upon a website called Tentcitymahakumbh.org.
The caller gave them a brochure and sought details of the six passengers. He sent her luxurious pictures and videos of VIP tents and asked her to make a payment to an account named UP State Tourism II with an IFSC code. He also promised them flight tickets even as official booking sites showed all flights were booked.
