The Centre has granted approval for the upgradation of 108 roads in Uttarakhand under the Pradhan Mantri Gramin Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). Union Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Giriraj Singh issued the approval letter on Friday (February 16).
The project involves the enhancement of 108 roads, with a combined length of 1,197.207 km in Uttarakhand, at an estimated cost of Rs 967.73 crore under PMGSY-III. Of this amount, the Centre will contribute Rs 803.85 crore, while the state government will bear the remaining Rs 163.88 crore.
The approval recognises the challenges faced by hilly areas, prone to natural disasters annually, leading to various hardships for the local residents.
The central government is currently allocating Rs 2 lakh crore for road infrastructure development in Uttarakhand, with the aim of transforming its roads to match those found in the United States by the end of 2024.
“I was told about various problems in the state, and today I am glad that most of those issues will be resolved. I promise you all that the projects worth around two lakh crore will be initiated to boost road infrastructure,” Nitin Gadkari stated, emphasising the government’s commitment to providing the state with international-standard road infrastructure.
“Roads in Uttarakhand will be like those in Switzerland and Australia,” he added.
