Major row over custodial death, family moves Calcutta High Court
Major row erupted over alleged custodial death of a person in Kolkata’s Amherst Street Police Station. The family moved Calcutta High Court with a plea for post-mortem of the body at any central government-run hospital instead of any state hospital.
The division bench of Calcutta High Court’s chief Justice T.S.
Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharya have agreed to hear the plea.
The family has alleged that Ashok Singh died due to police torture. The victim’s family members said that he was summoned to the Amherst Street police station after being accused of purchasing a stolen mobile phone.
The family members of the deceased youth, who reportedly died in custody at the Amherst Street Police station on Wednesday night, moved Calcutta High Court.
The family members also demanded a video graphy of the entire process of the post-mortem.
The victim’s family claimed that the death of the youth was due to police torture in the police station.
BJP leader and Councillor Sajal Ghosh said, “Had the police shown the CCTV footage to the family members, the matter would have ended.
