suicide on Thursday in South Kolkata's Netaji Nagar over the alleged fear of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), his family members claimed.
Debasis Sengupta, a 31-year-old resident of Netaji Nagar, allegedly died by suicide and was brought dead at the Sonarpur Rural Hospital. He was found hanging at his uncle's residence.
The family members claimed Debasish was too panic stricken over the CAA. «His grandfather had come from Bangladesh and Debasish was born here. But the deceased was always scared fearing he would be sent back to Bangladesh,» his aunt Sobha Roy said.
However, Debasish did not leave any suicide note and police did not confirm the cause of his death. His family members claimed that Debasish had been getting frequent panic attacks over the citizenship issue. «We told him that he was born in India and should not worry about CAA. He always discussed his documents and said his father's documents were lost while he had date of birth related problems in his Aadhaar. It was a topic of continuous worry,» Sengupta's aunt Sobha Roy claimed. Debasish's father is very old and he was the sole earner of the family.
Meanwhile, Trinamool General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee has formed a five-member delegation to visit the family of the deceased and stand with them in the hour of grief.
