Chinese Consulate in San Francisco last week is said to be armed with a knife and had a loaded crossbow in his car.
Zhanyuan Yang, the driver in a blue sedan was then fatally shot by police on October 9.
The attack occurred in the lobby area of the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China, with no additional injuries reported at the time.
San Francisco Police Department during a town hall meeting has shared body camera footage and 911 calls showing the details of the incident.
One video that was shared showed Yang holding a knife and dressed in a blue T-shirt and pants, his face concealed.
Yang was subsequently confronted by officers, leading to a fatal encounter.
San Francisco Police Acting Cmdr. Mark Im detailed the events, stating, «Mr.
Yang made multiple, rapid downward swinging motions with the knife towards the direction of the sergeant and security guard.» Prior to police arrival, consulate security personnel had used pepper spray on Yang. At the scene, authorities recovered a loaded CenterPoint crossbow and arrows from the back seat of Yang's crashed vehicle, although a motive remains unclear.
Witnesses reported roughly 30 people in the consulate's lobby at the time of the crash, with one caller suggesting it was an intentional act.
A witness video captured numerous individuals fleeing the building as security personnel attempted to restrain Yang near his crashed car. The assailant, upon exiting the vehicle, was heard shouting, «Where is CCP?»—presumably referencing the Chinese Communist Party—before clashing with security.
