Man with an 'altered mental state' goes on stabbing spree in Washington DC; injures six

The incident occurred around 3:22 p.m. (local time) at the intersection of Montello Avenue and Meigs Place NE.
«Officers arrived on scene in less than a minute and located numerous people suffering from stab wounds,» D.C. Chief Pamela Smith said during a press briefing, as reported by ABC news.
Preliminary investigations suggest the suspect began the attack by stabbing himself while walking down the street, before turning his aggression towards a female acquaintance accompanying him. He then proceeded to attack other individuals present on the block.
Among the injured were four women and two men, including a grandmother and her two granddaughters.

«They were transported to area hospitals as a result of a senseless assault,» Chief Smith confirmed.
While the victims' ages were not immediately disclosed, authorities have stated that they are in stable condition, and their injuries are not considered life-threatening.
Two individuals who attempted to intervene and halt the attack were also stabbed. Chief Smith acknowledged their bravery but cautioned against such actions in the future.
«Even though we're grateful for their intervention, we would ask that individuals who see incidents such as this to not intervene because these two individuals, although good Samaritans, were also stabbed as part of this assault,» she said.
The suspect, whose identity has not yet been released, was apprehended at the scene. A knife, believed to be the weapon used in the assault, was recovered nearby. He was also transported to a local hospital and is currently undergoing surgery.
