OYO, one of India’s largest hospitality chains, has implemented a new check-in policy for its partner hotels in Meerut, which prohibits unmarried couples from checking in without valid proof of their relationship. The policy, effective this year, applies to both in-person and online bookings, ensuring that couples must provide official documentation confirming their relationship before they can stay.

OYO has instructed its partner hotels in Meerut to enforce this new policy immediately. Under the updated guidelines, the company has also given partner hotels the discretion to decline bookings from unmarried couples based on their judgement, taking into account the local social norms and sensitivities of the region. This flexibility allows hotels to assess each situation and decide accordingly.
«OYO has received feedback in the past from civil society groups especially in Meerut urging action to address this issue. Additionally, residents from few other cities have petitioned for disallowing unmarried couples to check-in at OYO hotels,» company officials stated in a communication with news agency PTI.
