A senior police officer, who did not want to be named, said the convoy was on its way to Jiribam district, after fresh violence last week after the killing of one person. The convoy preceeded Singh's scheduled visit to the state's bordering district with Assam. The CM was slated to visit the area on Tuesday.
The advance convoy was attacked near Kotlen village on the Imphal-Jiribam National Highway (NH-37).
The police officer said that militants fired multiple gunshots at the CM's security forces, who retaliated and the gunmen eventually fled. The police officer added that the security personnel sustained injuries to his shoulder and was immediately rushed to a hospital in Imphal for treatment.
Additional security forces, comprising personnel of Assam Rifles and Manipur Police, have reached the site of the attack, around 40 km from Imphal, and launched a massive combing operation to nab the militants.
The chief minister arrived in Imphal from New Delhi on Monday afternoon and visited the injured security personnel, Moirangthem Ajesh at the hospital.
Talking to the media, Singh said it seemed to be a direct attack on the people of Manipur.
