Manipur government will start capturing biographic and biometric details of illegal immigrants as the situation becomes normal in the state. Manipur has been caught in a series of ethnic strife since May 3. Earlier the government of India has asked the government of Manipur and Mizoram to carry out the exercise and warp the same by September this year.
The letter from Under-secretary of Government of India, Pratap Singh Rawat to the chief secretaries of Manipur and Mizoram stated,” It is further mentioned that a campaign for capturing of biometric data of the illegal migrants in the States of Manipur and Mizoram is to be completed by the end of September, 2023. The State Governments of Manipur and Mizoram are requested to quickly prepare the plan and initiate the biometric capture of the illegal migrants.” A senior officer in Manipur who does not want to be named told ET, “Already the state government has the people from Myanmar staying in the state. The process of gathering the biometric details will start as the situation in the state normalises.” Union Home minister Amit Shah on June 1 had stated, “For a permanent solution, on a trial basis, fencing has been erected on 10 km.
Along 80 kilometres, work has been tendered. Survey has been done for the rest of the area. Biometric registration and retina scan of people who have come from neighbouring countries will be done.” Manipur shares a 400 km border with Myanmar.
