Louisiana town of Garyville after a refinery reported a fire and leakage in its chemical storage tank. Marathon Petroleum has claimed that the leakage has been contained after the crew responded to the leakage of naphtha, a flammable liquid that can be used as fuel. St. John the Baptist Parish officials said that evacuation is mandatory for all residents of the area within a radius of two miles.
Marathon Petroleum Corp. also has asked all the residents living in a radius of one mile to evacuate temporarily. In a statement, it said, “As a precautionary measure, St. John the Baptist Parish is requiring residents within a one-mile radius of the part of the refinery closest to the fire to temporarily evacuate to locations the Parish is making available.”
It said further, “As always, our main priority is to ensure the safety of our employees and contractors, our neighbors within our surrounding community, first responders, and to limit environmental impact.”
