parliamentary polls on March 17.
Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the main opposition which has a majority in the Maldivian parliament, is expected to put up a strong fight in polls, ET has learnt. The elections will test Muizzu's policy, including his approach towards big powers like India and China, according to observers of Maldivian politics.
The last parliamentary polls were held in 2019, resulting in a landslide victory for MDP, which won 65 of the 87 seats in the Majlis. Muizzu represents the People's National Congress which won just three seats.
In a surprise move, Muizzu has appointed lawyer Ahmed Shaan, accused of sexually assaulting a minor, as deputy minister.
