Francis Ford Coppola won the Cannes Film Festival's Palme d'Or, he will return to the French Riviera Festival to premiere his self-financed epic 'Megalopolis'. 'Deadline' first reported that 'Megalopolis' will be screened in competition at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on May 17, 2024. After years of stagnating, people will have their first glimpse of the sci-fi film, that stars Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, and many others.
Confirming the premier of 'Megapolis', Head of Cannes, Thierry Fremaux, told Variety, «Megalopolis is a project that Francis Coppola wanted to achieve for so long and he did it independently, in his way, as an artist. He built the legend of the Cannes Film Festival and it would be an honor to welcome him back, as a filmmaker who comes to present his new film.»
The Cannes Film Festival will begin on May 14. Earlier it announced premieres for George Miller's «Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga» and Kevin Costner's «Horizon, an American Saga.» On Tuesday, the festival said George Lucas will receive an honorary Palme d'Or.
Coppola has earlier screened the film for distributors in March. After 'Megalopolis' is screened in the competition, the 85-year-old director will be eligible for Cannes' Palme d'Or. He won this award 45 years ago for 'Apocalypse Now'. Coppola shared the Palme that year with Volker Schlondorff's 'Die Blechtrommel'.
