Mercury Prize, which celebrates the best British and Irish albums of the year, has been announced. ‘The Arctics’ make the shortlist for the fifth time with ‘The Car’. It shares the position with ‘Radiohead’ as the most-nominated act in the award's 32-year history. ‘Arctic Monkeys’, ‘Young Fathers’ and ‘J Hus’ too have been nominated.
The Mercury Prize has no category and it is open to all types of music. It shortlists 12 ‘Albums of the Year’ before crowning one overall winner. The 2023 Mercury Prize shortlist also features first-time nominees, like Raye, who makes her debut with her album ‘My 21st Century Blues’. It features her number one single ‘Escapism’.
