2023 college football season for Michigan State is set to begin at home on a Friday night, marking the kickoff of the 100th season at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing. Head coach Mel Tucker, in his fourth year, faces the challenge of improving the team's performance after a disappointing 5-7 season in the previous year, which began with the Spartans ranked No. 14 in the nation.
Their 2022 debut started positively with a 35-13 victory over Western Michigan.
Michigan State has a perfect 10-0 record in Friday season openers, including eight wins at home, a tradition that started in 2011. The Spartans have won their last four encounters with Central Michigan, most recently securing a 31-20 win in 2018. However, the Chippewas have posed challenges to the Spartans in the past, even managing a dramatic 29-27 upset at MSU in the second game of the 2009 season and two victories in the 1990s.
One significant question looming over this game is the starting quarterback for the Spartans.
The contenders for the position are redshirt junior Noah Kim and redshirt freshman Katin Houser. Kim served as the backup to Payton Thorne, who has since moved to Auburn, during the previous season. Kim saw action in four games, completing 14 of 19 passes for 174 yards and three touchdowns.
Houser had one appearance in a game with six snaps. Coach Tucker has remained tight-lipped about the starting quarterback, but it is expected that both will have an opportunity to play in Friday's matchup.
Central Michigan's offense will see changes with the departure of standout running back Lew Nichols III, who was drafted by the Green Bay Packers. In the previous season, CMU's offense ranked below average, producing 367.2 yards (84th in FBS) and 24.8 points
