A report in Sports Illustrated quoted Shams Charania stating that Portis had allegedly taken Tramadol — a prohibited substance — instead of the approved painkiller Toradol.
Charania, associated with ESPN, noted that Portis’ agent, Mark Bartelstein, defended his client, insisting the incident was a genuine mistake. Bartelstein criticised the NBA’s strict interpretation of the policy, calling it unfair.
Bartelstein emphasised that Portis has been working hard to improve his performance through natural, legal and healthy means. But he unknowingly took a pill he should not have. He expressed disappointment that the NBA enforces its policy so rigidly, leaving no room for honest mistakes made with good intentions.
According to media reports, Bartelstein stated that an assistant, who had a prescription for Tramadol, mistakenly informed Portis that it was Toradol. Portis, who had been using pain medication to manage an elbow injury, genuinely believed he was taking the approved drug.
