Modi plans Kuwait trip this weekend; first by an Indian PM in over 40 years
Kuwait is also home to a large Indian diaspora and was a key supplier of liquid medical oxygen to India during the deadly Delta wave of Covid in 2021. There are plans to put in place a maritime component to the partnership.
Regional developments including the situation in Gaza and Syria are expected to figure in the discussion agenda during the PM’s visit.
Contacts between the two countries have increased in recent years. Modi met Kuwaiti Crown Prince Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Sabah Al-Hamad Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah on the sidelines of UNGA in New York this September. Ministerial visits from Kuwait to India in the last few years include foreign minister Abdullah Al-Yahya from December 3-4.
During the visit of the Kuwaiti foreign minister to India, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed for setting up a joint committee to further strengthen cooperation at the level of foreign ministers. Joint working groups are being established in the areas of trade, investment, education, technology, agriculture, security and culture, under the JCC in addition to existing ones in areas including hydrocarbons, health and consular matters, officials recalled.
