Dev Patel’s action-packed directorial debut, Monkey Man, is headed to digital platforms for home viewing after struggling to make waves in theaters. The film draws heavily from Indian mythology.
Box Office Performance
Originally conceived as a Netflix project, Monkey Man was reportedly dropped by the streaming giant over concerns of potential backlash. However, Universal Pictures and Jordan Peele stepped in to give the film a full theatrical release. Despite its setting in India, exploring themes of corruption and bigotry reminiscent of the country's political climate, the film has not yet been released there. Despite earning an impressive 88 per cent score on Rotten Tomatoes and receiving acclaim for its storytelling, direction and thrilling action sequences, Monkey Man has struggled to translate its online buzz into box office success, earning a worldwide total of around $28 million in three weeks.
Cast
Monkey Man features a talented supporting cast, including Sharlto Copley as Tiger, Pitobash as Alphonso, Vipin Sharma as Alpha, and Bollywood stars, such as Sikandar Kher as Rana Singh and Sobhita Dhulipala as Sita. The film also includes Ashwini Kalsekar as Queenie Kapoor, Adithi Kalkunte as Neela, Makarand Deshpande as Baba Shakti and Zakir Hussain as a tabla maestro.
Digital Release Date
Monkey Man is currently playing in theaters and will be available for home viewing starting April 23.
