The additional seats are expected to be created over the next five years, at the IITs created after 2014- in Tirupati, Dharwad, Palakkad, Jammu and Bhilai, he said.
IIT Patna, too, will get an infrastructure upgrade, Pradhan said.
That apart, a new AI Centre of Excellence in Education will be set up at the cost of ₹500 crore.
Currently, 23 IITs admit over 17,700 students at the BTech level.
