Former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is turning 42 years old today. Known for his calm temperament under pressure, Dhoni has been celebrated among the fans and dubbed as the ‘Captain cool’.
He is still the only captain in world cricket to hold all three ICC White ball trophies i.e. ODI World Cup, T 20 World Cup and Champions Trophy. India's infamous victory in the inaugural edition of the 2007 T-20 World Cup is a tale for the ages.
In the final match against Pakistan, India had scored 157 runs in their first innings but Misbah-ul-Haq looked like he would take the game away from the Men in blue. Dhoni gave the ball to relatively inexperienced medium pacer Joginder Sharma in the last over the match against Misbah-ul-Haq. And surely enough, Joginder Sharma stood up for India and got the important wicket of Misbah in the second ball of the over. India had lost two crucial wickets of Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag early on while chasing a challenging total of 275 runs against Sri Lanka.
Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli managed to balance the innings for a while but in a surprising move Dhoni decided to promote himself up the order in place of Yuvraj Singh. At that point, it looked like a bad call given that the Indian captain had not found much form in the World Cup and Yuvraj Singh had a stellar tournament with the bat. However, Dhoni's tactics played off as India's captain cool led the team to ODI World Cup victory after 28 years with a six.
Rohit Sharma was originally a middle-order batter in the shorter format of the game. However, the talented batter had found little success batting lower down the order. MSD decided to give Rohit a different role in the Indian setup ahead of the Champions Trophy 2023.
