Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani overtook Adani Group's Gautam Adani to become the richest Indian, Hurun India Rich List 2023 released on Tuesday showed.
Adani in 2022 was ahead of Ambani by Rs 3 lakh crore. However, Ambani bridged the gap and trumped it in 2023 as his wealth was higher by Rs 3.3 lakh crore.
Adani, 61, has risen from 6th in 2019 to 2nd spot in 2023, with his wealth marking a five-fold increase. Ambani's wealth has grown 2.1 times while Poonwalla and family's wealth tripled in the last five years.
Cyrus Poonawalla retained the third position on the list. HCL Tech's Shiv Nadar, 78, retained the fourth spot on the list as his wealth increased 23% in the last one year.
Among the top ten individuals on the list, only two saw wealth erosion. Adani's wealth reduced 57 per cent while Radhakishan Damani's wealth dipped by 18 per cent, data shows.
With an addition of Rs 73,100 crore, Poonawalla & family saw the most gains in the last one year in absolute terms.
Zepto founder Kaivalya Vohra, 20, is the youngest individual on the list. Embattled startup Byju's founder Byju Raveendran exited the list owing to investor markdowns.
The pharmaceutical sector, with 133 entrepreneurs, saw the most individuals featured in the list, followed by chemicals & petrochemicals and industrial products which saw 109 and 96 entrepreneurs each.
