Gujarat High Court has refused to grant a stay on the order issued by the sessions court. The Sessions court had sentenced the senior Congress leader to two years in jail in a criminal defamation case by filed by BJP MLA Purnesh Modi. The court judgement had also led to Gandhi losing his membership in the Lok Sabha. Congress leader and Karnataka deputy Chief Minister DK Shivkumar has criticised the Gujarat HC judgement calling it ‘murder of democracy’.
In a video of DK Shivkumar shared by news agency ANI, he said, "It is very unfortunate that justice has not prevailed. It is a murder of democracy. But still the entire country, all the opposition parties and the people of this country stand by Rahul Ji.
He is a great leader who has been fighting across the country." Another Congress leader Pawan Kumar Bansal noted that Gujarat High Court judgement in the Modi surname defamation case in ‘wrong’. He told ANI, "We have always respected the judiciary and held it in high esteem but we believe that this decision is wrong - both in facts as well as law. Congress party have said that they will approach the Supreme Court in the defamation case against Rahul Gandhi.
Congress general secretary K C Venugopal after the Gujarat HC judgement said "There is one more option before us... the Supreme Court. Let's see.
The Congress party will seek that option too". BJP MP and senior leader Ravishankar Prasad, on the other hand, hit back at the Congress and Rahul Gandhi after Gujarat HC judgement. He said, "We would like to ask Congress - why can't you control Rahul Gandhi? Why can't you train him to speak properly? He is your leader.
