Tesla chief Elon Musk has declined an offer from Uber to collaborate on autonomous vehicles, Uber chief executive officer (CEO) Dara Khosrowshahi has revealed. During a recent interview, Khosrowshahi said that the Tesla CEO rejected the cab-hailing service’s proposal to partner in its robotaxi programme. He cited his conversation with Musk to assert that Tesla is determined to develop its autonomous vehicle project independently.

This decision implies that in American cities such as Austin, Uber and Alphabet-backed self-driving technology company Waymo will be competing with Tesla when it launches its autonomous service. However, Tesla has not officially confirmed its plans.
“I’ve had conversations with him at this point. They want to build it alone, so, to some extent in Austin, we and Waymo will be competing with Tesla when they launch. Life is long, but we would love to partner with them,” Khosrowshahi said in an interview with Bloomberg TV. “What we bring is demand to the AV ecosystem, when demand often is quite variable.”
Despite the rivalry, Khosrowshahi expressed willingness to collaborate with Tesla, saying it would make “a lot of economic sense” for Uber to serve as a platform for Tesla drivers since Uber helps stabilise demand in the often unpredictable autonomous vehicle sector.
