The World Health Organization (WHO) has stated that the outbreak is “a significant public health threat”. The case fatality ratio has been recorded at 12.3 per cent.
As per WHO, the exact cause of the illness is unknown. The disease was first reported in Equateur province’s Boloko village last month. A second cluster was reported on February 9 in Bomate Village, which is also located in the Equateur province.
The initial outbreak in Boloko was traced to three community deaths between January 10 and 13 among children under the age of five. Preliminary investigations revealed that the affected children had developed symptoms like fatigue, diarrhoea, fever and headache. Later, this progressed to haemorrhagic signs and symptoms such as epistaxis, and haematemesis, ultimately resulting in their deaths. Reports claim that the children had eaten a bat carcass before the onset of symptoms.
